Starling – Sturnus Vulgaris

Common problems associated with Common starlings

Starlings can be a continuous nuisance and health hazard in domestic and commercial environments. Some issues associated with high numbers of starlings:

  • Excrement causing fouling and creating a serious health risk.
  • Damage to buildings and sites from the corrosive nature of their guano.

Habitat and behaviour

The common starling has adapted  to occupy many different environments both urban and rural. Their ability to exploit a niche in the ecosystem has made this highly adaptable bird an expert at finding ways into buildings. Being able to do this means they can take advantage of circumstances wherever they arise, this often brings them into conflict with people due to the size of colonies and the mess associated with there roosting behaviour in large groups or flocks. Although doing well in many parts of the UK the common starling has declined in other areas and this has led to the starling being placed on the red list.

Problems caused by Starlings

Starlings are a big problem for businesses as well as in domestic situations. Starlings can be a public health problem and large starling flocks do not look good on a business from a customer or investors point of view. Starlings carry an array of diseases including salmonella and Chlamydiosis.

How to get rid of Starlings?

Whether it is a scaring method or total eradication by proofing we have the solution to your problem. Unfortunately there is very little that can be done by the property owners as they are protected under law. This requires getting the correct licenses in place and to do this you are required by law to be a competent and fully trained person.

The common starling is a small bird, smaller than a black bird and looks black in appearance at a distance. On closer observation the starling is a very colourful bird with irradesent speckles all over its body.
